Marigat sits on the shores of Lake Baringo, in Baringo County — hours from the nearest specialist paediatric care. In May 2026, the Gertrude’s team travelled there to bring Marigat Catholic Mission Hospital onto the Daktari Smart telemedicine network: setting up equipment, training local staff, and connecting the hospital directly to specialists back in Nairobi.
Daktari Smart, run in partnership with the M-Pesa Foundation, puts electronic stethoscopes, vital-signs monitors, ultrasound and ECG devices in the hands of rural health workers, with a live link to Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital specialists guiding diagnosis and treatment. At Marigat, the effect has been dramatic: the number of cases the hospital can manage each month has grown roughly tenfold, from 5–17 to 100–150 — one of six facilities the programme now reaches across Baringo, Samburu, Homa Bay, Lamu and Narok counties.
