On 29th May 2026, Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation and Sanlam Allianz held their second annual inclusive sports and wellness day in Nairobi, under the theme “Celebrating Abilities, Together We Shine” — a day of inclusive games, art and occupational therapy sessions, and caregiver forums for children with special needs, their families, therapists and mentors.
The need is real: according to the Kenya Institute of Special Education, 11.4% of Kenyan children aged 3 to 21 live with a disability or special need, yet most lack access to inclusive education, therapeutic support and social development opportunities. Launched in 2024 and anchored at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital Child Development Centre, the partnership aims to deliver social skills training to 300 children with disabilities and tailored occupational therapy to 50 children by June 2027 — building, as Foundation trustee Dr Robert Nyarango put it, the skills for children with disabilities to participate in “gainful and sustainable economic activities.”
